Memorial Day

With Memorial Day around the corner, are you planning a trip to the cemetery to remember those who served in the military, family and friends? What do you do while you are at the cemetery? Clean a grave? Leave flowers or other decorations? Share memories? Spend time wandering?

This year, when you visit the cemetery, don’t forget to take the Find a Grave app with you. The app can help you find the grave you are looking for and make it easy to check to see if the cemetery has open photo requests, missing memorials or memorials that need a photo or GPS coordinates. This guide can remind you of some things you may want to bring, this blog post describes one way to use the app at the cemetery and this help file has some tips for cleaning a headstone and taking great photos.

Do you visit the cemetery with family? Maybe some of your family members, including the younger ones, would like searching with the app and trying their hand at adding a photo, GPS or a missing memorial. This handy article can help you prepare and organize a group for a visit to the cemetery.

No matter what your plans are, we hope you and your family have a great Memorial Day as you remember those who have gone before.

  1. Would love to start Taking pictures again of undocumented grades and if their veterans all the more better love that. I was able to get credit for taking a picture of a long lost member of a veterans group that they couldn’t get a picture and I took it by chance what a thrill because I was taking pictures of everything and then figuring out if there was a memorial or not.

  2. Photo requests on Find a Grave for burials in a veterans cemetery are promptly responded to, but I go to a veterans cemetery nearby and take photos of headstones that do not have a photo on Find A Grave. Since veterans cemeteries are well documented it is easy to find the graves and I usually take three photos of each headstone from different perspectives. As there are over 1,800 graves without photo, it’s a long term project.
