Occasionally we get comments about the site from people who are visually impaired. We try hard to use designs that work well for people of all abilities, but it’s hard for one look to work for everyone. To help with that, we’ve added a “High Contrast” option to the themes for memorial pages.
We’d love to have you try out the High Contrast theme and let us know what works well and not so well for you.
To change your theme:
- Go to your Account
- Click on the “Site Preferences” link on the left
- Choose the High Contrast theme
- Click “Save Changes”
- Visit any memorial page to see the new theme

The High Contrast is definitely easier for me to read. Good Job!
It looks the font size for both the Birth, Death, Burial, etc. data and that of the Memorial’s bio are larger. Is that on purpose?
I don’t even like the dark theme and the darker actually bothers my eyes.

I wouldn’t use as the font size is way too large. Don’t like the dark background either. It’s like there’s no color in it. Probably be fine for someone who needed the larger printing.
I like it. I especially like that the text in the bio area is larger.
I’m not a fan of the black background!
Good Morning, I don’t have a problem with the high contrast. Since we’re referring to the visually impaired, I’m curious as to why only the top section is being adjusted and not the entire page? If the user has a choice of theme (background), then it shouldn’t matter that you’re adding extra themes. It’s all about what we get used to. Thank you for adding another option, sounds like you’re listening when a suggestion is made.
The dark is a little hard on my eyes, but I love the larger print.
I do not like the High Contrast. However, I do like the font size. The Dark is hard on the eyes. I prefer the light contrast of the four choices.
EXCELLENT! As an educator trained in accessibility requirements under the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) and required under the law to have all my course content compliant, I can tell you that the high contrast would absolutely meet federal guidelines. Great job! For those “not liking” the high contrast, there are other options. This site should be accessible by everyone!
I like it, and have no issues with it at all—but I was already using the Dark theme. It is probably a more jarring difference to people who have been using the Classic or Light theme previously.
I have been using it for a couple of hours and find overall I like it. I am not visually impaired other than I wear glasses to work on the computer. That being said here are my comments:
* The font is much easier to read. It is larger and therefore to me appears to be more crisp.
* The main photo against the darker background is usually easier to see unless the photo is very dark then it tends to get lost in the background. This can be remedied by viewing all photos where it is then displayed on a light background.
* I have always found it disconcerting that the theme is only applied to the memorials. I would like to see it also applied to the profile and other pages. This would give a more consistent feel to the site.
* I would also like to see the larger font used on the Edit page
* I can see how this would be very beneficial to visually impaired people and for those that don’t like it there
is always another option

I like the high contrast. The font is too big for me so I just decreased font size. Works for me.

I like it – on my WIN10 PC Chrome browser it’s also using a larger font, which is nice. I could use this look on the cemetery pages also, but not on lists, such as photo requests where I want to go through a lot of text quickly.

It is too much contrast with white letters which is why you seldom see dark background websites anymore, it actually bothers my eyes allot.
I once volunteered in the Crime Prevention Unit of a Police Dept. in California. The two Crime Prevention officers had attended a workshop on making signs and flyers for those with older eyes.
They learned that the best color combination was brown letters on light green paper. That was easier on older eyes and was easier for them to read.
I like the contrast, but prefer the regular size font. But, it is a great option for those who are sight impaired.
It is great to have this option. My husband has been going through cataract surgeries and struggling with seeing things. This is a great option for those who need help. Thanks for making this available!!
I personally don’t like the dark theme, but like the font size. I can see the benefit to others, it would be a good choice.
This is an incredible improvement for those of us with vision issues. I recommend keeping it as an option for everyone.

Ii love the larger, darker font and most of the other improvements.
Some of the links have a brown visited link color, some have black, and some have none, including the Share-Save-Suggest Edits boxes. Please make all of them the same, and make it a sharp contrast to the regular font color. Neither the black or the brown visited link colors are easy to see when they are mixed in with the unvisited blue link color. Make the visited color red, like the links across the bottom of the page.
The dark gray background on the top of the page is way too intense.
I really like the high contrast colors. I like the darker top with white text better than the Dark theme. For me since I have a large monitor and sit farther away the larger font is nice. It might be handy if you had the high contrast as two different themes like small and large so you have the option of a smaller font too.
I like the HC theme. All of the themes are good for me and I really have no preference of one over another. It is now set at HC and I will leave it that way. Thanks!
I have slight vision problems. I could not tell the difference until I switched back to “dark” as I had before. The white around the tabs helps a lot. The item I have problems with is when adding parents or spouses. if the spouse was separated more that would help as I also have shaky hands.
I supposed it is my browsers that cause the other problem and that is the page jumping after any action. I go to click edit to add a spouse and the page jumps and I end up clicking the cemetery. I have to teach myself to wait a bit I guess.

I really like the High Contrast. It’s easier for me to read and I don’t find myself squinting as much. Thanks for trying to make the site accessible to more people.

I have worn glasses since I was 6, that would be 68 years for me. The older I get the stronger the lens get. As a person who loves working on FG, and am doing quite a lot lately, this new option is great. The larger font and higher contrast makes it much easier to read. I plan on keeping this theme.
FYI ~ At 100% on Firefox the font is smaller than 100% on Chrome. I will change the size on Chrome to 90% to make it the way I want. I generally go to 110% on Firefox to make it easier to read. I use both browsers when working on FG as I also do extensive research, but prefer Firefox specifically for FG work..
Another great improvement to the site, especially at this time in our lives when we are using the site more than ever.
I usually use the dark theme, as I found it easier on the eyes, but I really like the high contrast and larger font. Good job!!
As I said before, I really like the HC theme, but the editing fields are still quite small. It would be helpful if the editing page of the memorial had more contrast and was easier to read also. I always write BIOs and that field is way to small as is the “Inscription” field.
I like the larger font, but the black is just too black. I’ll try it for a while to see whether I get used to it.
I like the high contrast as an additional option. The black background and the larger font are very helpful. I sit back from my monitor a bit and already find the main screen easier to read. It would be nice if the editing page could be modified to follow the font size, etc.
Well, except for the obvious in the various shades of grey, I’m alright with any of the four different backgrounds. But since I’m not the one about whom this beta testing concerns itself, let me simply say that we should be asking people with vision impairments, and I’m not one of those. I’m just wondering, however, at what level of vision impairment can someone that has it see the screen well enough to discern what it contains? Me’thinks that’s the greater concern.
I think the new options, including the high contrast, is a plus. It’s good to have different contrasts for when we work on the memorials for so long of a time.
I tried the three themes and the high contrast. Kudos for making the site easy to use by everyone.
I have now been using the high contrast theme for 3 weeks. So far I have only found one thing I don’t like about it. Often times (depends on size or orientation of primary photo) the text under the photo is obscured. I don’t know if this is a function of my monitor but I don’t think so. An example of this is memorial #8320971. I can only see the top portion of the caption.
