We recently received a message from a Find a Grave member who said, “I was wondering if it would be possible to get a penny added to the flower collection under the veteran category. I like the tradition of leaving pennies on veteran’s graves and think it would be nice here.”
As with any tradition there can be some variation, but in general, a coin at the gravesite lets the family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respects. A penny means you visited, a nickel means that you were at boot camp with the person buried there, a dime means you served together and a quarter means that you were with the soldier when they died.
We really appreciated the suggestion and feel like this is a nice fit for the flowers on Find a Grave, so we’ve added four new options to the “Veterans” category of flowers:

Nice tradition and great idea. I can’t help wondering whether countries other than the US might have interesting traditions as well for visiting veterans’ graves.

These flowers options should be available in Belgium, though they are US coins. Are you not seeing them? Is there a similar tradition in Belgium?
