Leave a Coin on a Veteran’s Grave

We recently received a message from a Find a Grave member who said, “I was wondering if it would be possible to get a penny added to the flower collection under the veteran category. I like the tradition of leaving pennies on veteran’s graves and think it would be nice here.”

As with any tradition there can be some variation, but in general, a coin at the gravesite lets the family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respects. A penny means you visited, a nickel means that you were at boot camp with the person buried there, a dime means you served together and a quarter means that you were with the soldier when they died.

We really appreciated the suggestion and feel like this is a nice fit for the flowers on Find a Grave, so we’ve added four new options to the “Veterans” category of flowers:

We hope you will find them useful as you remember and honor those you love on Find a Grave.

  1. Nice tradition and great idea. I can’t help wondering whether countries other than the US might have interesting traditions as well for visiting veterans’ graves.

  2. Great idea = how about something for doctors in the occupation section?

    • These flowers options should be available in Belgium, though they are US coins. Are you not seeing them? Is there a similar tradition in Belgium?

  3. I’ve seen this many times in cemeteries. Glad you added this option.

  4. I’ve seen this but did not understand the meaning until now; thanks for explaining.
